“Christ, can we tone down the color on these? That’s bright,” I said, closing my left eye and keeping my right focused on Axel. “Maybe something less red?”

“Noted,” Axel replied dryly. I wondered if he would actually take my feedback into consideration and then decided I didn’t care. As long as these specs got us closer to the goal it didn’t matter if they blinded me in the process.

“You’re only twenty three?” I asked as I lowered my hand and scanned the information again, genuinely shocked. To nobody’s surprise, he didn’t bother answering me. As I scanned the stats again, I realized there was something even more surprising hidden in the mostly-useless data. “You’re a widower?”

“Why do you think I’m here?” Axel snapped, and my eyes drifted to the wedding ring he still wore. He twisted it around his ring finger, a nervous habit that I’d seen a thousand times and never considered the weight of.

“What happened?” I asked, and then winced. Like I had any right to ask this man to bare his darkest moments to me. Then again, he’d witnessed my own breakdown facing a digital version of warehouse Y.

“You know how I was already on the team before Max brought you in?” Axel asked, raising an eyebrow. I nodded, and Axel let out a heavy sigh, clearly frustrated that I wasn’t putting two and two together the way he expected. “You know anything about his sister?”

“Sophia?” I asked, and Axel’s lips tightened into a thin line.

“Yeah, Sophia,” he said, his voice soft as he repeated her name. Her full name. “Sophia Jones .”

“You were married to-” I started to ask, but didn’t finish the sentence. All the details added up, then, and I remembered what Max had told me about his own experience with LemTech’s justice system, about what had inspired him to put this crew together in the first place.

Sophia Jones had worked for LemTech corporate as an accountant. She’d taken a few documents home to work on after-hours, and those documents had somehow made their way into the hands of the FTC.

Martin Redmon, CEO of LemTech, had not been pleased.

Sophia had lost her job, but Redmon hadn’t stopped there. He’d taken her to court, claiming Sophia had falsified the documents and that she’d been embezzling from the company for years.

And when Redmon had won the case, he had magnanimously offered to let Sophia serve out her sentence in the newly-launched LVL Redemption Program. Little did she realize the technology that LemTech had used at the time was unstable and prone to sending electrical jolts through the user’s nervous system. Paired with a previously-undiscovered heart condition, Sophia had died only two months into her sentence.

Leaving Axel Jones a widower.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, but after all the antagonism between us, it sounded sarcastic even to my own ears. “Seriously, Axel-”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Axel said, and I understood that better than most.
